An American In Paris

It opened in Paris and then took Broadway by storm and now the multi-award-winning An American in Paris is lighting up London at the Dominion Theatre.

American GI Jerry Mulligan is desperately trying to make his way as a painter in Paris when he meets beautiful young dancer Lise. This chance encounter opens up a whole new world to Jerry, one in which art, sensuality, friendship and love combine against the troubled backdrop of post-war France. Starring Ashley Day and Leanne Cope as Jerry Mulligan and Lise Dassin, this is a production not to be missed.

Inspired by the Oscar winning film of the same name, An American In Paris is one of George and Ira Gershwin’s most beloved musicals and has been hailed as a flawless marriage of music, dance and romance. Exhilarating and impeccably performed, An American In Paris features more than fifty musicians, actors and dancers as well as many of George and Ira Gershwin’s most popular songs, including ‘I Got Rhythm’ and ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’. Directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon, who is supported by a crew of heavyweights in the costume, set design, sound and lighting fields, An American In Paris is a ravishing and elegant production will sweep you off your feet.

No story spoilers but plenty to say about this show's cast, costumes, scenery and lighting, not forgetting the excellent musicians doing magical things to the score. The colours are sublime and the monochrome backdrops a wonderful contrast and tribute to the era. I recommend taking those steps to The Dominion Theatre without delay!

  • Fantastic musical combining musicals with ballet

    22 June 2017

Absolutely blown away by this production. Brilliant dance/ballet routines throughout but all eclipsed by the main ballet scene towards the end. Very talented cast combining acting and superb ballet. Beautiful inventive set. Even the theatre was great with cool air con on a day when the temperature was 32 outside

  • More dance than singing

    22 June 2017

My wife and I both enjoyed the show. Although she loves ballet like me, she hoped for more songs from the great Gershwin repertoire. I can see why ballet and swing dancing were more pronounced and I had failed to realise this might be so for this show. I am very aware of the classical/jazz Gershwin style associated with his symphonic poem but was half expecting a greater infusion of songs with the refurbishment of this great score.
